West Elm Style - Atomic Ranch House Furniture without breaking the bank.

Two x Twelve (pine) framing lumber needs to be everyone's friend.  Use it to build solid pieces of furniture with a clean linear retro-modern-ranch 60's feel.  Easy to build with basic tools and a little help from Lowe's or Home Depot's wood cutting department.  Buy a 4 x 4 post (ask nicely and have it cut at some Home Depots) and cut it into four 18" pieces (or whatever height you desire).  These are your legs.  Then, simply have  a 2 x 12" piece of lumber cut to your desired measurements.  Form a simple square or rectangle and cut 7.7" interior columns (the size of a standard DVD) with the leftover wood.  These will make your compartments.  Counter sink screws from the bottom base to the "columns."  Then, side-angle all other screws from the top of the interior side of the columns to the top piece of the furniture.  There are many ways to do this, but the trick is to hide the screws.  Use "L" brackets to attach the legs to the bottom base (in the least visible spot).  Angle-screws from the legs to the base for additional support.

You can easily make a piece worth more than $400 for under $40 in supply costs.  And the options are endless.  Make headboards, coffee tables, sofa tables, end tables in the same style.
